New Writing 15 written by Patrica Dunker

Welcome to the Notes for New Writing 15. These Notes are aimed at teachers of English language and literature, primarily taught as a second language, but at an advanced level. I have designed the Notes to provide a structure for class work. The practice of writing should never be divorced from the study of literature – or to put it more scientifically – the interrogation of texts, that is, literature in its broadest sense. Students rarely have enough knowledge of the language or literary form to shape their work in original interesting ways without guidance. Structured reading provides the best scaffolding within which to build. And so with this strategy in mind I have arranged the Notes as follows:

General Introduction: This paragraph provides a brief, critical introduction to the piece(s) of writing under discussion and a general context within which to develop class exercises and debates. I may consider the significance of the theme or content of the piece in relation to other works by the same writer or other writers.

Questions to Consider: These can be used as discussion points in the class or as questions for writing projects aimed at more advanced students interested in critical analysis. These questions may address issues of language, form, genre, register, method and technique.

Writing Exercises: These can either be set as homework or used as class writing exercises. Some address the piece directly and others use the extract or finished piece under consideration as a point of departure for further creative or critical writing. Thus the Notes can provide a framework for literary analysis or original composition.
